Looking for the right kiln: Tips and experiences
As a ceramicist, I'm constantly faced with big decisions in my business – and purchasing a new kiln is definitely one of them. For me, it's not just a significant financial investment, but above all a decision for the heart of my workshop. The kiln is, in a sense, my most important working partner, one I have to be able to rely on 100 percent, day after day.
For two years, I've been intensively searching for a new kiln. Since I often receive questions from my community about this topic, I'd like to take you along on my research journey in this blog post. Together, we'll explore the most important aspects of choosing the right kiln—from technical considerations to practical tips.
1. The most important requirements for my new kiln
To make the right decision, I created a detailed list of all the requirements my new kiln should meet, taking the following factors into account:
• Size & Volume: How many ceramic pieces need space for each firing? What kiln size fits my workshop?
• Temperature range: For which temperatures must the oven be designed?
• Energy efficiency: How much power does it consume, and are there energy-saving models?
• Ease of maintenance & durability: How easy is it to maintain the oven?
• Design: front loader or top loader – which model suits my work style better?
2. Exchange of experiences: Learning from other ceramists
The exchange with other ceramicists was particularly valuable for me. Their practical experience enabled me to gain many important insights that helped me make my decision.
Which models have proven themselves in everyday use? Often, it's only through discussion that you discover which stoves are particularly reliable and deliver good long-term results. Equally important is the question: What should you pay particular attention to? Many aspects that aren't immediately apparent in technical data sheets—such as user-friendliness, insulation quality, or the ease of use of the controls—become much more tangible through the experiences of others.
These conversations also made me aware of avoidable mistakes. For example, I was repeatedly advised to pay close attention to the correct kiln size, as models that are too small or too large can quickly lead to inefficient work. A personal conversation or a glimpse into a colleague's workshop can often provide more clarity than any product description.
3. Use specialist advice: Why it’s worth going to a specialist retailer
In addition to exchanging ideas with other ceramic artists, the consultations with specialist dealers were particularly valuable. They not only answered my technical questions but also provided valuable tips on optimal use and care.
An on-site expert consultation will ensure that the oven is truly a good fit for your workshop. Factors such as electrical voltage, installation conditions, exhaust air flow, weight, and door size are crucial – specialist retailers can provide professional answers here. Many retailers also offer training so you can operate the oven correctly right from the start.
After-sales service is also a huge advantage. Should repairs or replacement of the heating coils become necessary, having a competent contact person nearby is invaluable. This saves you time, money, and stress in the long run.
4. My decision: front loader or top loader?
After I had very good experiences with a top-loader over the past seven years and my workflows running smoothly with it, it quickly became clear that my new kiln would also be a top-loader.
A particular advantage of a top-loading machine is the ability to see clearly from above whether glazed pieces are spaced sufficiently. If the ceramic pieces are placed too close together when loading, the glaze can melt together—which is annoying and often ruins the entire piece. The open view from above allows me to check this directly and make adjustments if necessary.
A top-loader offers additional advantages: It saves space, retains heat more efficiently, and has a more even temperature distribution . Furthermore, top-loaders are often cheaper to purchase than front-loaders and have fewer mechanical wear parts, making them easier to maintain. Top-loading is particularly convenient for large or heavy items, as there's no door in the way. Even partial loads benefit from better heat retention.
5. My choice: The TOP 190 from Nabertherm Why I chose the TOP 190
After careful consideration, I decided on the TOP 190 model from Nabertherm. This kiln has a volume of 190 liters . A special highlight of this model is that it is mounted on transport wheels , allowing me to move it flexibly within my workshop as needed.
