From clay lump to ceramics - the history of creation
Share post
Before a ceramic piece is ready for sale, several steps are required. So today I'll take you on a journey through the creation of my ceramics.
Every single formfrei piece from my workshop is a unique, handcrafted creation. No two pieces are 100% alike, which is what makes my work with ceramics so special. From the first contact with the clay to the finished formfrei product, it takes approximately three weeks. During this time, each individual piece undergoes many meticulous steps, which ultimately give the ceramic its own unique character and charm, making it a unique piece. Here's a brief overview of the necessary steps.
Step by step to the finished formfrei ceramic piece
Step 1: The clay is prepared. This means it is portioned, kneaded, and formed into a ball.

Step 2: Now it's time to move on to the potter's wheel. The clay is turned on the wheel and shaped into the desired ceramic piece.

Step 3: After approximately 24 hours, the clay will have a leather-hard texture and can be turned. Once turned, the signature stamp is pressed into it.
Step 4: Once the piece is completely dry, the raw firing takes place at 950 degrees Celsius. It can take up to 18 hours before the kiln is opened.

Step 5: The fired ceramic piece is now sanded, washed and cleaned.
Step 6: Next comes the glazing and the corresponding glaze firing. This firing is the highest firing at 1250 degrees Celsius. Due to the temperatures, it can sometimes take up to 35 hours for the kiln to cool down enough for me to empty it.

Step 7: Finally, the bases of the ceramic pieces are sanded and cleaned once again before they are displayed for sale in our winery's salesroom.

As you can see, each individual product undergoes a short journey until it becomes a genuine formfrei ceramic piece. The entire process is exciting every time. But I enjoy steps 2 and 3 the most, as these are the two steps in which a new, unique, formfrei piece is created.
I hope you enjoyed this little insight.
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!
